A cap does half the job. It shades your eyes and leaves the back of your neck and the tops of your ears out in the full glare. By the end of a morning on the boat or a long stretch of exposed track you find out exactly where the sunscreen did not reach.
And when the sea breeze picks up, a loose hat is gone. Over the side, into the creek, or bouncing down the beach while you chase it.
This hat has a brim all the way round and a strap that keeps it on your head.
The brim is about 7.6 cm and runs the full circle of the crown. That puts shade on your face, your ears and the back of your neck at the same time, not just across your forehead. It is the same idea that has kept the boonie in use for decades: simple, all-round cover.
Under the brim sits an adjustable chin strap with a cord lock toggle. Snug it up when the wind gets going on the water or a ridgeline and let it hang loose when it is calm. You stop holding your hat on with one hand.
The fabric is washed 100% cotton, so it feels soft from the first wear rather than stiff and new. Ventilation eyelets through the crown let some heat out on still days. Now the honest part. Cotton is comfortable, not quick-drying. If it gets soaked it will stay damp for a while, and the hat carries no UPF rating.
Around the crown is a contrast band with a brass lure ring, a practical spot to hang a fly or a small lure. When you are done, the whole hat folds flat into a backpack side pocket or tackle bag.
Brim all the way round. Strap that holds. Flat in your pack.
