You know the trade-off. Open sandals feel great on a hot day right up until you catch a toe on a rock on the creek track or a hook skates across the deck. Shoes protect you and then cook your feet by lunchtime, and once they are wet they stay wet for the drive home.
Then there is the heel. Most sandals hold you at the front and let the back of your foot slide around, which is fine on a footpath and hopeless on loose gravel or a slippery boat ramp.
This sandal closes at the front, locks at the back and breathes everywhere in between.
Up front sits a rubber toe cap. It wraps the end of the sandal, so when you kick a root, misjudge a step on the rocks or wade across a stony creek bed, the rubber takes the hit instead of your toes. No exposed toes, no flinching on every rocky stretch.
The upper is perforated synthetic with a mesh lining. Air moves through it on a warm afternoon on the coast track, and it is water-resistant, so a wet ramp or a splash from the tinnie is not the end of the day. Now the honest part. This is a water-resistant sandal, not a waterproof boot. It is built to cope with wet conditions and dry out again, not to keep your feet bone dry.
The fit is set in two places. A toggle lace pulls the front snug in one move, and a hook-and-loop strap closes the heel. Together they hold your foot front to back, so it does not slip forward going downhill or lift out of the heel when you move quickly.
Underneath is a rubber outsole of about 2.5 cm that keeps its footing on trails, coastal paths and uneven, damp ground. At roughly 320 g per sandal it stays light enough for a long walk.
Covered toes. Locked heel. Cool feet.
