You know the hat. It does its job on the brim and fails everywhere else. Twenty minutes into a summer walk the crown is a sealed box of hot air, your forehead is wet and the band is soaked through. So you take it off to cool down, and now the sun is on your face again.
Then there is the other problem. A stiff hat does not go in a bag. It rides on the back seat of the ute, gets sat on, and is never there when the sky clears at the beach.
This hat keeps the shade where you need it and lets the heat out where it builds up.
The whole crown is woven polyester mesh. Hot air rises off your head and goes straight out through the top instead of sitting there. On a still, sticky afternoon that is the difference between keeping the hat on and carrying it.
Inside the crown sits a moisture-absorbing sweatband. It catches what the airflow does not, so sweat is not running into your eyes when you are bent over a rock pool or working the bank.
The brim is a mid-width brim of around 6 cm, held with snap pins so you can set it the way you want it. Now the honest part. This is not a wide-brim hat. It shades your face and eyes but it will not cover your shoulders, and it carries no UPF rating. It is built for light, cool shade on long warm days, with sunscreen on the rest of you.
The crown is crushable. Fold it, push it into a daypack side pocket or the glovebox, pull it out later and it springs back. At about 80 g you will not notice it is in there.
Cool on top. Shade up front. Folds away when the day is done.
