Most women's activewear is built to do one thing. Running shorts ride up on the track. Hiking shorts look out of place at the gym. Leggings turn into a sauna the moment you step out of the air-conditioning on a hot summer morning.
And nearly every pair has the same token pocket — too shallow for anything that needs to stay put while you move. So the phone ends up in your hand, tucked into your sports bra or left in the car, depending on the day.
These shorts do both jobs: a 15 cm inseam that stays put on the run and on the climb, quick-dry stretch fabric, a drawstring waist and zipped pockets that actually hold a phone.
The 15 cm (6 in) inseam is the crossover length. It's long enough that it doesn't ride up on a long stride or a big step up a rocky track, and short enough that it doesn't feel like extra fabric when you're running intervals.
The fabric is a light stretch woven. It moves with your leg instead of resisting it, so there's no bind at the hip when you squat, lunge or scramble up a bank. It's thin and quick-drying — made for the sweaty half of the day, not just the coffee afterwards.
The waist is elastic with a proper drawstring. Cinch it to the shape of your waist on the day and it stays there: no sliding on the downhill, no digging in on the uphill, no hiking the waistband back up every few hundred metres.
The pockets zip shut. A full-size phone fits, along with keys and a card, and nothing bounces out mid-run or slides out when you bend down to retie a lace.
Now the honest part. These are warm-weather shorts. Light and thin by design — right for spring, summer and autumn on the track, the road or in the gym, not what you want on a frosty winter morning.
Phone zipped in. Stride unchanged.
