Two hours into a bushwalk and your little toes are pressed against the side of the shoe on every downhill step. By the time you are back at the car park there is a hot spot on the outside of each foot, and the next morning you are reaching for thongs instead of the shoes you paid good money for.
Most walking shoes are cut narrow through the front. If your feet are wide, or they swell on a hot summer afternoon, that narrow toe box is where the day goes wrong.
These shoes are built wide from the start.
The last is a wide fit, so the forefoot has room for your toes to spread as you push off. That matters most on long descents and loose gravel, where a squeezed foot slides forward and rubs. A padded collar and tongue hold the heel in place while the front stays roomy.
Up front, a black rubber bumper wraps over the toe. When you clip a root or a rock on a bush track, the bumper takes the knock instead of your toes. The upper combines suede-look panels with breathable mesh, so warm air has somewhere to go on a humid walk.
Underneath is a deep lugged outsole with orange grip inserts across the forefoot and heel. Chunky lugs bite into dirt, wet leaves and loose stones, and the raised sidewall gives the foot a stable platform on uneven ground.
The lace-up front runs from low eyelets to metal speed hooks at the top, so you can snug the shoe around your ankle for the steep bits and loosen it off at lunch. A heel pull loop makes them easy to get on at the boot of the car.
Sizes on this page are Australian men's. Australian men's sizing follows UK sizing, so an Australian men's 8 is a US men's 9. This shoe is made on a small-running scale: if you are between sizes, or you wear thick hiking socks, go up to the next size.
