It is barely ten o'clock on the track and the sun is already on the back of your neck. A cap shades your eyes and nothing else, so by lunch the tops of your ears are stinging and your collar has rubbed the burnt strip raw.
The usual fix is to pile things on. A cap, a buff pulled over your nose, a towel tucked under the back of the cap. It slips, it traps heat, and half of it ends up stuffed in a pocket by the afternoon.
This hat does all three jobs in one, and you decide how many of them it does today.
The base is a wide brim bucket-style hat, about 40 cm across with a brim that reaches roughly 10 cm out from the crown. That brim shades your eyes, cheeks and the top of your ears on its own, which is all you need for a walk to the shops or an hour on the beach.
When the sun gets serious, a neck flap snaps on around the back and sides of the brim. At about 47 x 24 cm it drapes over your neck and shoulders, the spot a cap always leaves exposed on a long bushwalk or a day on the water.
A separate face cover snaps on at the front, roughly 30 x 27 cm, with a breathable mesh panel over the mouth and nose. Wear it on a windy beach, on a dusty track or out on the boat, and unsnap it the moment you want an open face again.
Around the top of the crown runs a mesh vent band, so heat can escape instead of building up under the hat. An adjustable drawcord at the back takes the hat in to fit heads from 56 to 62 cm, and keeps it on when the breeze picks up across a ridge or a jetty.
The whole hat weighs about 110 g, light enough to forget you are wearing it and easy to roll into a daypack when you get back to the car.
One size, fits head circumferences from 56 to 62 cm, adjusted with the drawcord at the back. To check your size, wrap a soft tape measure around your head about 1 cm above your ears and across the middle of your forehead. The hat is unisex.
One hat. Three ways to wear it. All summer long.
