You have rigged light braid, a fluorocarbon leader and a soft plastic the size of your little finger, because the bream on the flats are spooky and the water is gin clear. Then you clip it all to the same reel you use off the rocks. The cast dies early, the rod feels nose heavy, and by the second hour your casting arm knows exactly what that reel weighs.
All-round reels are built to do a bit of everything, which is why they are heavy and deep spooled. Finesse fishing wants the opposite.
This reel is built light first.
The 1000S and 1500M sizes weigh about 136 g (4.8 oz). The body is a carbon fibre composite with 46 percent carbon fibre, which is where most of the weight comes off. The centre of gravity sits back toward the rod, so the reel balances under your hand instead of pulling the tip down.
The spool is shallow. It fills with the light line you actually fish rather than metres of backing, and its wide, low-inertia design lets the line peel off the lip with less resistance, which is what you want when the lure only weighs a few grams.
The retrieve runs on nine stainless steel bearings. Water-resistant rings and double-sealed bearings help keep water out, and the materials are corrosion resistant, so the reel is made for the estuary and the jetty as well as the dam.
At the end of the arm is a flat paddle knob you can pinch between two fingers and wind all day. The finish is dark grey and silver, plain and understated.
It suits light lure fishing, squid off the jetty and slip-float fishing, anywhere the line is thin and the bite is soft.
1000S is the lightest option for the finest line and the smallest lures. 1500M sits in the middle. 2000S steps up for a little more line on the same light set-up. The 1000S and 1500M weigh about 136 g.
Light line. Light lures. Light reel.
