The walk into the water is always the hard part. A beach of round stones that roll under your heel, shells along the edge of the rock pool, sand at 2 pm that is too hot to stand on. You hobble in, you hobble out, and you promise yourself you will buy swim shoes before next summer.
Thongs are no help. They float off the moment you are past your knees. Old runners do stay on, but they come out of the surf heavy, full of sand and squelching all the way back to the car.
These slip-on water shoes go in with you, stay on, and come back out light.
A thin rubber sole runs under your whole foot. It is flexible enough to swim and kick in, but it puts a layer of rubber between your skin and the pebbles, shells and hot sand on the way in. Grip pads run through the middle of the sole, with a round pad under the ball of your foot, another under the heel, and a toe grip at the front for pushing off.
The upper is a stretch honeycomb mesh with bound edges, cut like a sock. It hugs your foot rather than sitting loose around it, and that snug fit is what keeps the shoe on when you swim, wade or paddle out. A band across the top of the foot holds the upper down over your instep.
Because the upper is mesh, water runs straight through it instead of sitting inside, so you are not carrying a shoe full of sea back up the beach. A soft lining sits against your foot, and a pull loop at the heel gives you something to grab with wet hands when you are pulling them on at the water's edge.
Sizes on this page are Australian men's sizing, which follows UK sizing. They are unisex, so women can go by the EU size each one ships as:
| AU / UK | EU |
|---|---|
| 6 | 39 |
| 6.5 | 40 |
| 7.5 | 41 |
| 8 | 42 |
The fit is snug by design, like a sock, and this style runs small. If you are between sizes, or have a wide foot, take the larger size.
Stop hobbling. Start swimming.
