Saturday morning, and the dandelions and thistles in the back lawn have beaten you to it again. Out comes the hand fork, down go the knees onto a folded towel, and for the next hour you work along the edge of the garden bed with your nose almost in the dirt. Half the time the root snaps off just under the surface, and the weed is back in a fortnight. A hand fork was never much of a weed puller.
Spray is quicker, if you do not mind chemicals on the lawn the kids and the dog play on.
There is a cleaner way to get the whole root out, and you do it standing up.
This stand up weed puller lets your foot do the work.
Four narrow steel claws sit at the bottom of a one piece 112 cm stainless steel shaft. Set them around the weed and step on the curved foot pedal: the claws drive into the soil and close around the taproot from every side, instead of pinching it from two.
Tilt the handle back and the claws lift the weed out with the root attached. Your leg supplies the force, so your arms and lower back are not doing the work, and you stay upright for the whole job.
Then press the same pedal again. It doubles as the ejector, so the weed drops straight into the bucket. You never touch it and never bend down to pull soil off the claws.
It works most reliably in damp soil, where the ground lets go of the full taproot instead of letting it break part way down. After rain or a good watering is the time to do the lawn.
No kneeling. No chemicals. No hands in the soil.
