The river bank on day two of a paddle trip. The kayaks are pulled up, lunch is done and there is an hour to kill, but the only places to sit are wet sand and hot rocks.
Or a Sunday at the national park. The picnic rug gets the food, the kids get the shade, and you end up on the edge of it with a tree root under your hip.
A single hammock is the lightest way out of that. It packs into a sack the size of a grapefruit, goes in the side pocket of a daypack, and turns two trees into a place to lie back.
The body is lightweight nylon in two tones, sized at 220 x 90 cm for one adult. It is a closer, more cocooned fit than a wide double, which a lot of people prefer for a nap: the sides wrap up around you and keep the breeze off.
The suspension is a rope at each end and a carabiner on each rope. Loop the rope around the trunk, tie it off at the height you want, and clip the carabiner through the hammock's end loop. Because the ropes are adjustable, they work on a thin sapling or a thick old gum alike.
The stuff sack is sewn to the hammock, so it cannot get left behind at the campsite. Pack up by pushing the fabric in and pulling the drawcord. When the hammock is up, the same sack hangs at the end as a pocket for a phone or a water bottle.
Nylon also dries fast. After a swim, climb in in your boardies and it will be dry again by the time you pack up.
Small in the pack. Big in the shade.
