Soft sand on the beach run, tyres already let down, and the tide on its way in. You lose momentum on a dune for one second and the back wheels dig a hole to the diffs. Nobody else is on the beach to snatch you out.
Or it is a wet track in the high country after a summer storm, the clay has filled the tread, and every bit of throttle just polishes the ruts deeper.
Recovery tracks are the self-recovery gear you reach for first. No second vehicle, no winch point, just you and a pair of boards.
Each track is a long, stiff nylon board, about 90 x 30 cm. The top is covered in raised studs and wave shaped ribs that bite into the tread of the tyre. The ends are tapered and curved, so they slide in under the tyre instead of pushing against it.
Clear the sand or mud from in front of the bogged wheels, using the end of the track as a shovel if you need to. Push a track in hard against each tyre at the angle you want to drive, get in, engage low range and drive on slowly. The tyres climb onto the boards, grip the studs and roll you out on to firmer ground.
The key is to drive, not spin. Wheelspin on the boards wears the studs down quickly. Steady, low throttle is what gets you out and keeps the tracks in shape for the next one.
Slotted handles are moulded into the sides and ends, so you can carry them, pull them out of the sand afterwards and strap them to a roof rack. Small holes at each end take a leash or mounting pins. The pair nests together flat for storage, and the bright orange is easy to find again once the sand covers them.
Two boards in the rack. One less tow.
