The power goes out in a summer storm, or the mobile signal drops out halfway to camp. Suddenly your phone is the only thing doing everything — torch, news, contact — and it is sitting on 18%.
So you ration it. Screen off, torch off, no idea what the weather is doing or whether the road is still open.
This radio keeps itself charged from the sun or a few turns of the handle, lights up the room, and tops up your phone from a 10,000 mAh battery.
Three ways to charge. Plug into USB when you have power. Leave the solar panel facing the sky at camp. Or, when the sun is gone and the power is out, turn the hand crank. Whichever way, the energy goes into the 10,000 mAh battery, and a power display shows how much is left.
That battery runs the radio and charges your phone through the USB output. AM and FM pick up local and regional stations without any mobile signal. There is also a WB band on the dial for 162 MHz weather channels — those are not broadcast in Australia, so for weather and emergency updates here you will be on AM or FM.
Light comes two ways. The torch has three beam modes — far, dipped and mixed — and there is a dedicated SOS button. A separate COB reading lamp throws a wide, even light across a tent or a kitchen bench instead of a narrow spot.
A compass, an antenna, a tuner dial and a carry handle round it out. One unit in the emergency kit instead of three.
Powered. Lit. Informed. Whatever the night brings.
