Your deck looks straight into the neighbour's second-storey window. Every time you sit down with a coffee, someone can see your table, and from about 3 pm the western sun comes in flat across the balcony as well. You need an outdoor privacy screen, but not one that turns the deck into a box.
A tarp tied to the railing fixes the view for a day. Then the wind gets behind it, it starts flogging against the rail, and the first shower leaves a puddle sagging in the middle.
This screen takes the other route: knitted shade cloth that breaks up the view and softens the glare while air and rain go straight through.
The panel is knitted shade cloth rather than a solid sheet. The knit is dense enough to break up the line of sight from the street and next door and to take the edge off harsh afternoon light, but open enough to let the breeze pass. Because the wind is not trapped behind it, the screen does not balloon like a tarp, and rain drains through instead of pooling.
A reinforced hem runs all the way round the edge, with stitched border tape and metal eyelets set at even spacing along every side. Black reinforcement patches sit over the corners, where the pull is strongest once the panel is tensioned.
Fitting is tie-on. Thread cord, cable ties or bungee cords through the eyelets and pull the panel tight against a balcony rail, a pool fence, a pergola beam or carport posts. Nothing has to be screwed into the wall, so it suits renters too, and it comes down again whenever you want it gone.
Five sizes run from 2 x 2 m to 4 x 5 m, so you can screen a single balcony section, a run of fence or a full pergola side.
Your deck. Not theirs.
