Twenty minutes into the fire trail, the stock mountain bike seat stops feeling like a seat. It's a hard, flat plank, and every root, rock and corrugation on the way down comes straight up through it. By the time you roll back into the car park, you've spent more of the ride standing on the pedals than sitting down.
Summer makes it worse. At three in the afternoon a solid saddle holds the heat right where you sit, and a wide, square nose rubs the inside of your thighs on every single pedal stroke.
This bike seat fixes the three things a stock saddle gets wrong.
The top is padded with gel and memory foam over a shaped shell. Instead of a flat board you get a cushioned surface that gives a little under your sit bones, so the chatter from gravel, roots and washboard is softened before it reaches you. On a long ride, that is the difference between sitting down and hovering.
A cut-out runs the length of the centre, open right through the saddle. It takes pressure off the middle of the seat, where a solid saddle pushes back hardest, and it gives air a way through instead of trapping heat under you on a hot day.
Up front, the nose narrows sharply. Your thighs pass it cleanly on every pedal stroke, so nothing rubs on the inner leg, and sliding forward for a steep pinch climb is easy.
Underneath, standard twin rails clamp into the seat post of most mountain, road and touring bikes, so it goes on where your current saddle comes off. The wear-resistant PU cover has a non-slip finish that keeps you planted, and a quick wipe takes the dust off after a dirt track.
Soft seat. Cool ride. Free legs.
