Forty minutes into a Saturday loop the saddle starts to feel narrower than it did in the driveway. By the second hour you're shuffling around on it every few hundred metres, standing up on every rise just to take the weight off, and the phone in your jersey pocket is slapping your lower back on every stretch of corrugated gravel.
Most cheap padded cycling shorts let you down in one of two ways. The pad is a flat sheet of foam that has packed down by the third ride, or the pad is fine but the shorts move around it, so by lunchtime it's sitting somewhere it was never meant to be.
These knicks fix the pad and the shorts at the same time.
The 4D gel chamois is built in layers. A firmer gel insert sits right at the sit bones, over a multi-density foam base, under a perforated top surface lined with COOLMAX. Your weight lands on bone instead of soft tissue, the foam spreads what's left outward, and the perforations let the heat out of the seat instead of holding it there on a 35-degree morning.
A pad only works if it stays where it was designed to sit. This one is stitched into a contoured one-piece seat panel with a curved flatlock seam and a centre back seam, so it can't drift. Each leg finishes in a wide band with a raised silicone dot gripper on the inside, which stops the legs riding up and dragging the pad with them. The waistband is wide, flat and elasticated with no drawcord, so there's nothing to dig in when you're tucked down into a headwind.
Then there's carrying. A zipped pocket sits across the back just below the waistband, with a reflective strip along the top of the zip, and it holds a phone, key or card closed over rough bitumen and cattle grids. An open hip pocket is set into the side panel and takes a gel, a key or your phone where you can reach it without sitting up. The waist cut means no bib straps over your shoulders and a quick stop at the café or the servo.
Sizes run S to 3XL. Cycling knicks are cut to sit close to the skin, which is what keeps the pad in place. The table shows the waistband measured relaxed and fully stretched; your waist should sit inside the range for your size.
| Size | Waistband relaxed | Waistband fully stretched |
|---|---|---|
| S | 52.5 cm | 80 cm |
| M | 55 cm | 83 cm |
| L | 57.5 cm | 86 cm |
| XL | 60 cm | 90 cm |
| 2XL | 62.5 cm | 95 cm |
| 3XL | 65 cm | 100 cm |
Gel where you sit. Phone where you reach. Just ride.
