The hire bikes are booked for the rail trail weekend, or the new e-bike has been sitting in the garage, and you know how the first long ride goes without padded bike shorts. Forty minutes in, the saddle has found both sit bones, and the second half of the ride is spent shifting around looking for a spot that isn't sore.
Proper padded knicks fix the saddle, but then you're in skin-tight lycra at the café, the pub or the cellar door. Cotton boxers under your normal shorts do nothing for the saddle and ride up into a damp bunch by lunch.
These go underneath instead.
The sewn-in chamois has two raised gel pads that sit under your sit bones, where the saddle presses hardest. Beneath the gel is a layer of high-density sponge and beneath that a perforated silicone layer, with a channel running down the centre, so saddle pressure is cushioned across the pad instead of landing on two small points.
The body is a fine stretch mesh. Heat and sweat get out through it instead of being held against you the way cotton holds them, so you stay cooler and drier on a hot ride.
The legs run to mid-thigh with flat seams, covering the inner thigh where ordinary boxers ride up and rub. A wide elastic waistband and a close fit keep the pad where you sit when you lean forward over the bars.
Wear them next to the skin with no underwear beneath, then pull your usual shorts on over the top: walking shorts, MTB baggies, chinos or trackies. Nobody at the café knows they're there.
Sizes are S, M, L, XL and 3XL; there is no 2XL in this run. The fit is close by design, like snug trunks, because the pad only works when it stays under your sit bones. Wear them next to the skin with no underwear beneath.
Keep your shorts. Change what's underneath.
