Forty minutes up the ridge track and the shorts have already let you down twice. The belt you threaded on at the car is digging in every time you step up onto a rock, the phone is bouncing against your leg in an open pocket, and the heavy cotton is soaked through at the waistband before the first lookout.
Most shorts are made for walking from the car to the café. The moment you crouch, climb or sweat, they pull, sag or stick.
These are cut for the bits of the walk that actually ask something of you.
The fabric is a polyamide and spandex blend with four-way stretch, so it moves with you when you lift a knee onto a boulder, squat to refill a bottle at a creek or swing a leg over a fallen tree. Nothing pulls tight across the seat or the thighs, and there is no stiff denim-weight cloth to fight against.
The belt is part of the shorts. A flat webbing strap runs through the waistband and closes with a low-profile buckle at the front, so you cinch it once to the fit you want and there is no separate belt to pack, forget or dig into your hips under a pack's hip strap.
Every pocket closes with a zip. There is a zipped pocket at each front hip for your hands and a phone, a diagonal zipped pocket on each thigh for keys, a wallet or a snack, and a zipped pocket on the back. Five places to put things, and none of them can tip out when you sit down on a rock or climb back into the ute.
The fabric is lightweight and quick to dry, so a creek crossing, a downpour or a sweaty climb on a 35-degree day does not leave you walking in wet, heavy shorts for the rest of the afternoon.
The honest part: these are a slim, athletic cut that sits above the knee. If you want baggy cargo shorts with big flap pockets, these are not them.
Men's sizes S to 4XL in a slim, athletic fit that sits above the knee. The built-in belt lets you fine-tune the waist. A measured size chart is not available yet: if you sit between two sizes, take the larger one and use the belt to bring the waist in.
One buckle. Five zips. All summer.
