Lunch stop on a bushwalk. The only seat is a log full of ants, the ground is damp from last night's rain, and everyone is perched on their packs trying to get comfortable for twenty minutes.
Or the afternoon at the campsite. The camp chairs are still in the ute, the tent is too hot to lie in, and the shade under the gums is the best spot for kilometres if only there was somewhere to stretch out in it.
A hammock fixes both. It weighs next to nothing, it packs smaller than a drink bottle, and it turns any two trees into the best seat in camp.
The body is parachute-style nylon in two tones, cut at 270 x 140 cm. That width is the point: lie at a slight angle across it rather than straight down the middle and the fabric flattens out under you, so your back stays straight instead of curling into a banana.
Setting up takes a couple of minutes. Wrap a tree strap around each trunk, pull it through its own loop to tighten, then clip the carabiners at each end of the hammock into a loop on each strap. The straps have a row of loops along their length, so you raise or lower the hammock by moving the carabiner to a different loop instead of re-tying anything.
Wide straps also sit flatter against the bark than a thin rope, which is kinder to the tree and less likely to slip down the trunk.
The stuff pouch is sewn to the hammock, so it can never go missing. Packing up means stuffing the fabric into the pouch and drawing it shut. Hung up, the same pouch sits at the side as a spot for your phone, sunnies or a book.
Two trees. Two straps. Done for the afternoon.
