Saturday night on the back deck, the fire pit going and the stubbies out. Every time someone throws another log on, a shower of embers drops through the grate and lands on the timber. Most go out. One doesn't, and on Sunday morning there is a black ring burnt into the boards that no amount of sanding gets out.
Out bush it is the same story on the grass under the camp fire pit or the little wood stove, a scorched patch you leave behind for the next lot to find.
This mat goes underneath and catches what falls.
It is a square of heat-resistant fibreglass cloth that lies flat under the fire pit, the kettle BBQ or the camp stove. Ash, embers and the odd falling coal land on the mat instead of the deck, the pavers or the grass.
The supplier describes three layers: an aluminium foil layer that reflects heat, a fibreglass layer, and a silica gel layer that it lists as heat-resistant and waterproof. It rates the fibreglass to 800 °C.
Each corner has a round metal eyelet. On grass or sand you can peg it down so a gust doesn't lift a corner into the fire, and on a deck the weight of the fire pit keeps it in place.
When the fire is out and cold, brush the ash off, fold the mat and put it away. The supplier lists it as reusable and easy to clean, and it folds up to go in with the fire pit.
Choose 80 x 80 cm for a small fire pit or a portable BBQ, or 100 x 100 cm to give a larger fire pit room on every side.
It sits under the fire, not instead of common sense. Keep water close, check local fire restrictions and total fire bans before you light up, and never leave a fire burning unattended.
Light the fire. Keep the deck.
