The seat your bike came with felt fine in the shop. Twenty minutes along the river path it's a different story. The pressure has moved to the one place you don't want it, you're sliding forward and back looking for a better spot, and the last few hundred metres home are done standing on the pedals.
So you try the big sprung sofa seat. It's soft for a week, and then the wide side wings start rubbing the insides of your thighs on every pedal stroke.
This comfortable bike seat takes the middle out of the problem.
An open cut-out runs down the middle of the seat from the nose to the tail, right through the shell. With nothing underneath to press up into the soft tissue between your sit bones, your weight goes where it should, onto the two sit bones themselves.
Under each sit bone there's a gel pad set into a foam base, which is where your weight lands when you ride sitting upright on a hybrid, an e-bike or an exercise bike. The shell beneath is moulded plastic with the open centre carried all the way through.
The shape is mid-width. It's wider than a narrow race saddle, so your sit bones have something to land on, and narrower than a sofa seat, so there are no wide wings rubbing your legs. The nose is narrow and there's a notch at the back between the two wings. It measures about 27.5 cm long and 16.5 cm wide.
Fitting is a straight swap. The twin metal rails clamp into a standard seat-post clamp with one Allen key (not included). Set it level to start with and adjust the tilt a little after a ride or two if you need to. Most riders settle into a new seat over the first few rides. The synthetic leather cover has a stitched edge around the cut-out and wipes clean after a wet ride or a dusty track.
Gel under the bones. Nothing in the middle. Back on the bike.
