Day three at a bush camp with no power. The phone is on its last bar, the power bank went into the phone yesterday, and the lantern you charged at home is down to a dim orange glow by the time the dishes are done. You end up cooking by head torch and eating in the dark.
Every camping light runs out. The question is whether it can fill itself back up while you are out on the track.
This one has its own solar panel on top.
The roof of the lantern is a built-in solar panel. Leave it on the camp table, the car bonnet or the roof rack while you are out for the day and it charges from the sun, with no outlet and no cable. When you do have power, it also charges by USB, so you can top it up from the car or a power bank before you lose the light.
Four tall light panels wrap the body, so the light spreads all the way round instead of throwing one bright spot. The side panels fold out to open the lantern into a wide flood of light for the whole campsite, and there is a front spotlight for a focused beam when you are looking for something specific.
Six light modes cover warm white, cool white, a flash mode and several brightness levels. Warm and low for sitting around after dinner. Cool and bright for setting up the tent or cooking. Flash for when you need to be seen.
Next to the button is a four-step battery gauge marked 25, 50, 75 and 100 percent. You know how much light is left before you head to bed, not when it fades out halfway through finding your keys.
The carry handle lets you take it to the drop toilet in one hand or hang it from the awning or a tent loop, hands free.
Sun in by day. Light out by night.
