The sun drops behind the ridge, the tent needs pitching properly and somebody has to find the tin opener. The little head torch lights up exactly one spot, and everyone else is cooking by phone screen.
Then you get home and a storm knocks the power out for the evening. The lantern in the shed needs batteries you do not have.
This lantern charges itself during the day and opens up to light the whole camp at night.
A solar panel is built into the lid. Leave the lantern on the camp table or the dash while you are out on the water, and it soaks up daylight for the night ahead. On a cloudy run of days, top it up over USB from a power bank or the car instead.
The side light panels fold open, turning a compact lantern into a broad floodlight that covers the whole campsite, the annexe or the back verandah. A front spotlight puts a focused beam on the tent zip, the track to the amenities block or the tackle box.
Six light modes cover warm white for dinner, cool white for working, flash for signalling and several brightness levels in between. Four small indicator lights next to the power button show 25, 50, 75 or 100 per cent, so you know how much light is left before you need it.
The carry handle lets you walk with it or hang it from the tent loop. When you pack up, the panels fold back in and it travels small in the gear tub. The body is ABS plastic in military green.
Sun by day. Light by night.
