Three days into a trip out west, the red dust is in your hair, behind your ears and down your socks. The nearest shower block is an hour's drive back the way you came, and the creek is either cold enough to take your breath away or too low to get wet in.
A bucket and a cup works, sort of. Mostly it means standing in a puddle while somebody pours cold water on your head.
This bag lets the sun do the hot water.
Fill the bag through the red cap at the top. It holds 20 litres. Lay it flat in the sun with the black side up, the way the instructions printed on the bag tell you to, and the dark PVC soaks up the heat and warms the water inside while you set up camp or go for a walk.
When you are ready, hang it by the handle at the top from a branch, the roof rack or the awning. A clear hose runs from the valve at the bottom of the bag to a red shower head, and the supplier lists the flow as adjustable, so you can run it gently and make 20 litres go further.
The print on the bag also carries a warning worth repeating: in strong sun the water can get above 50 °C, so test it on your hand and add cold water before you stand under it.
When it is empty it folds flat. The supplier lists it at 320 g and 40 x 60 cm flat, small enough to roll into the corner of the camping tub or the bottom of a pack.
It is not only for showers. Use it for rinsing sandy feet at the beach, washing hands before dinner, cleaning up the dishes or hosing the mud off the dog before it gets in the car.
Fill it at lunch. Shower at sunset.
