Saturday arvo, the snags are in the fridge and the mates are on their way. You lift the hood of the barbie and find a week of gum leaves, pollen and bird mess on the hotplate, and a film of grime on the knobs from the last storm that blew through.
A barbecue lives outside all year. Summer sun fades it, salty coastal air works on the steel, and every downpour leaves water sitting where it should not.
A good cover stops all that at the door.
The cover is cut in the shape of a hooded gas barbecue: a flat top, sloping shoulders and long sides that drape down towards the wheels. It slides on over the hood and side shelves in one go and lifts straight off again when it is time to cook, with grab handles on top to make that easier.
The outer is heavy-duty Oxford fabric with a water-repellent finish, so rain beads up and runs off instead of soaking in. On the inside sits a silver lining that faces the sun-baked side of the cover. The seams are double stitched where the cover takes the most strain.
Wind is what usually ruins a cover. Adjustable hook-and-loop straps on each side wrap around the legs or frame and pull the cover in tight, and a drawcord with a toggle at the hem cinches the bottom so the breeze cannot get underneath and lift it.
When you need it off for a while, it folds down and wipes clean with a damp cloth.
The honest part: measure your barbecue before you order. A cover that is too small will not reach the wheels, and one that is far too big catches the wind. The size guide below takes about two minutes with a tape measure.
Measure your barbecue with the hood closed: width across the widest point including the side shelves, depth from front to back, and height from the ground to the top of the hood. Pick the size that is a little larger than your measurements.
| Size (W x D x H) | Typical barbecue |
|---|---|
| 145 x 61 x 117 cm | Compact, around 3 burners |
| 170 x 61 x 117 cm | Standard, around 4 burners |
| 190 x 71 x 117 cm | Large, around 5 to 6 burners |
Cover it tonight. Cook on it Saturday.
